Sometimes it takes a four-year-old to ask the question no one else thought to ask.
Eco Bandage didn't begin with a sustainability mission.
It began with a four-year-old girl, and an idea.
When our daughter Kiowa was little, she couldn't understand why taking care of a cut meant covering it with a sticker bandage. In her four-year-old imagination, there had to be something better.
To quote her: "I wanted a bandage I could paint on like skin because I didn't want anyone to know I had a boo-boo."
That was the moment the idea for a skin-tone liquid bandage was born. Vibrant colors soon followed!
It was a simple childhood idea. One we couldn't stop thinking about.
Ultimately, it raised a surprisingly big question:
Why hadn't everyday wound care really changed in decades?
A Four-Year-Old's Idea Became A Dermatologist Approved Wound Care Innovation.
It didn't take long before we decided to find out if a skin-blending liquid bandage could actually be made.
It could. That's when our family embarked on the journey to create Boo Boo Goo - the world's first waterproof, antiseptic liquid bandage in diverse skin tones and fun colors. When Kiowa was just six years old, she and her dad pitched the concept prototype on Shark Tank's 100th episode, featuring kid entrepreneurs. The pitch led to a deal from Mr. Wonderful (Kevin O'Leary). After careful consideration, we decided it wasn't in our best interest to proceed with the deal, so we moved ahead on our own.
Amazingly, that was just the beginning of a decade-long, bootstrapped development process to reach a formulation we were truly happy with... and would actually use in our own home.
What began as a bandage for kids became a bandage for everyone.
Realizing the potential in creating a sticker bandage alternative for all ages, Boo Boo Goo naturally evolved into Eco Bandage.
And the deeper we went into developing the product, the more we began questioning the entire category around it.
Traditional adhesive bandages have an important place in first aid. There are wounds and situations where they're absolutely the right choice.
But do we need a disposable sticker bandage for every tiny cut, scrape, hangnail, blister, minor burn, or cracked fingertip?
We didn't think so.
And that's when another part of the problem became impossible to ignore.
The Waste Hiding in Our First-Aid Kits
A traditional bandage isn't just a bandage.
There's the adhesive strip. The pad. The backing. The individual wrapper. Then, after a relatively short period of use, it all gets thrown away.
Sometimes another bandage immediately replaces it.
Multiply that simple routine across millions of people, day after day, and the amount of single-use first-aid waste becomes significant.
We hadn't set out looking for an environmental problem.
We discovered one while trying to build a better bandage.
And sustainability became an important part of the Eco Bandage mission.
Does Every Cut Really Need a Sticker?
We aren't anti-bandage.
Far from it.
There is absolutely a time and place for traditional adhesive bandages, and we're excited to see innovation happening there too—from better materials to more sustainable designs.
Our question is much simpler:
Do we need one every time?
